Objective: Design a monument and surrounding memorial space that will visually remind and inspire Americans today to reflect on the significance of “We the People” and the idea of forming a "more perfect Union".
DESIGN & PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS
Requirements:
- Construct a visual replica of your monument and memorial space to present to the class. Be both creative and clever in your design! Your construction may include any of the following methods:
- Wood, cardboard, toothpicks, metal, paper, clay, legos, etc.
- Colored sketch/drawing (digital or paper)
- Minecraft
- Other w/ teacher approval
- Incorporate into your monument and memorial space engraved phrases/texts from important primary source documents (speeches, writings, etc.) or your own music and art that reinforce the meaning and goal of your monument and memorial space.

Vietnam War Memorial
In 1981, at 21 and still an undergraduate, Maya Lin won the public design competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to be built on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Her design was given only a "B" grade by her Yale professor but it was the one that would beat out over 1,422 submissions other competitors.
